Go behind the scenes at Sotterley. Become an insider and enter places you won’t see on a regular tour. See the kitchen and travel up the back staircase to view private chambers and undisplayed collections. Learn what it takes to operate and support a museum.

Sotterley Plantation's Original Slave CabinLiving History Program: Vince Leggett as Charles Ball

Through the generous sponsorship of the Maryland Humanities Council and Star Spangled 200, this event will be FREE, but reservations are requested by calling 301-373-2280.

Charles Ball was an African-American slave from Maryland and was sold to a South Carolinian cotton planter, thus estranged from his wife and children who remained in Maryland. After several escapes and recaptures, he wrote his autobiography with the help of his lawyer, Isaac Fisher.

Sotterley Plantation's Dining RoomColonial Revival Collections - An Insider's View

The Colonial Revival drove Herbert & Louisa Satterlee, owners of Sotterley from 1910-1947, to collect objects and include architectural features in the home that revealed who they were and what was important to them.

Take a close look at Sotterley’s collections and what they tell us about the owners and what it may tell us about ourselves.

Tour begins at the Visitor Center with a short presentation and then travels to the Plantation House.
