2019 Speaker Series: The Common Cause

June 19, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

THE COMMON CAUSE: Creating Race and Nation in the American Revolution
Robert Parkinson – Historian, Author, Associate Professor

Parkinson’s book reflects on how the patriots generated and managed colonial outrage toward the British inorder to mobilize support for war by appealing to colonial racial prejudices. Using rhetoric like “domestic insur-rectionists” and “merciless savages,” the founding fathers rallied the people around a common enemy and made racial prejudice a cornerstone of the new Republic.
